Iran Taking Over Latin America Articles / Opinion Editorials


During the last couple months, Iran and Saudi Arabia have been playing a political tug of war over Latin America. On November 10, 2015, Iran’s deputy foreign minister held a private meeting with ambassadors from nine Latin American countries to reaffirm the Islamic Republic’s desire to “enhance and deepen ties” with the region. This was followed by similar statements from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Tehran later that month.

The same day, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Adel al-Jubeir, presided over a South American-Arab world summit in Riyadh. FM al-Jubeir, while Ambassador to the United States in 2011, had himself been the target of an Iranian-Latin American assassination plot.

The message of the Saudi summit was clear: An Arab rapprochement with South American countries will increase Iran’s isolation in the world.

Unfortunately for the House of Saud, in South America, they are more than thirty years behind their Persian rivals.

Bogus passports create refugee challenge Articles / Opinion Editorials

One of the suicide bombers who blew himself up outside a soccer stadium in Paris was in possession of a Syrian passport. Reports indicate that the passport was not his own, and yet, officials don’t know why the terrorist was carrying it.

This is part of the challenge immigration officers face when screening and selecting refugees for resettlement into Western countries.

Verifying information is a key component of this process. And while Canadian immigration officials are trained to decipher lies and inconsistencies in testimonies, things get more complicated when would-be refugees present false or fake documents.

Identity verification is frequently the most time-consuming and difficult portion of any security clearance check. The task is made more difficult thanks to the booming black market for fake passports and other immigration documents.

Since many European countries give preferential treatment to Syrian refugees, Syrian passports have become a hot commodity in the underground economy.

But those aren’t the only fake passports being used to deceive officials.

Acusan al régimen venezolano de vender pasaportes a terroristas en el Medio Oriente Media Mentions

El Gobierno venezolano estaría presuntamente implicado en la emisión de documentos y pasaportes para grupos terroristas; así lo afirmaron medios de comunicación locales, tras la confesión de un supuesto diplomático venezolano y un artículo de investigación del portal ArmandoInfo.

Un funcionario del Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas, Penales y Criminalísticas (CICPC), identificado como Misael López Soto, quien supuestamente fue consejero de la embajada venezolana en Irak, confesó a la periodista venezolana Andreina Flores que fue testigo de que el Gobierno venezolano entrega documentos diplomáticos a terroristas del Medio Oriente.
